People who are depressed may respond to antidepressant drug like Amitriptyline; this medication work by varying in the different levels of serotonin, norepinephrine and other neurotransmitters in brain which helps in eliminating the sense of sadness and gloom. The tests indicate that it takes two to three weeks to become effective.
Antidepressents like Amitriptyline are not addictive but like every other drug it also has side effects. Antidepressents have three major category and Amitriptyline falls into one of the category name as Tricyclic. Tests also suggest that Tricyclic may cause side effects like, drowsiness, double vision, nausea, indigestions and dry mouth.
It can be taken with or without meals. 40- 150mg should be taken by and adult after the recommendation of the doctor. It should be taken less effective dose if required. Monoamine oxidase inhibiting (MAO), work by restraining the enzyme monoamine oxidase, in nervous system, and if it breaks the neurotransmitters than the chemicals in the brain which control nerve impulse transmission can affect mood.
MAO inhibitors produce a more balanced emotional state. But Elavil must not used with MAO because it can cause hazardous side effects including death and seizures. Elavil can cause high blood pressure if used with Epinephrine. Alcohol helps increasing the sedative reaction but blocks the Elavil reaction, while Cimetidine (Tangamet) can cause a rise in blood levels of Amitriptyline and side effects. Amitriptyline is has traces in breast milk and its dangerous to breastfeed the infant; it can affect the health adversely. There are more serious array of side effects which been reported and is suggested that if any of these side effects occur then the use of this drug should be stopped.
